Let's review the Eagles' top priorities for this week:
secure the top seed in the NFC.
avoid significant injuries
Job done! Obviously, it was far from pretty but if you watched ANY of the games this weekend you'll note that it's rarely pretty this time of year. Jacksonville, Dallas, the LA Chargers and Miami all looked rough this weekend, and those are teams that actually MADE the playoffs. A couple more thoughts for tonight:
Philly should be as healthy as can reasonably be expected once their first playoff contest rolls around. The returns of Jalen Hurts and CJGJ today were notable. Lane Johnson, Josh Sweat and Avonte Maddox may be as well.
It's been pointed out elsewhere, but this is hardly the first time that Philly has backed into the playoffs. Who else remembers that awful Christmas night game in 2017 against the Raiders? Nick Foles looked terrible (and didn't get much help), and only a game ending fumble return for a score made the score look slightly not-gross. The Eagles' backups then got beaten by Dallas, and the buzz around the team was that they had no shot in the playoffs. Remember how that worked out?
It's entirely reasonable to think that two weeks of rest, prep, and most notably pressure from the Philly media (there will be a LOT of "the sky is falling" angst from the beat and the fans alike) will produce a completely different team for their first playoff game (quite possibly, a rematch with either the Cowboys or Giants).
We do need more from our coaching staff; still too many questionable decisions to have full confidence.
No matter what else, at least this team looks better than Dallas. The Cowboys looked terrible, Dak Prescott looked terrible, Dallas really wasn't in that game. This is as healthy as their offense has been all season, and they totally laid an egg.
I may have a few more thoughts on this game in a couple days, but for now color me as "cautiously optimistic".
